THE SEOUL ACADEMY ENSEMBLE SUBSCRIPTION PERFORMANCE

It is very meaningful for doing something sustainable for a long period. It is because there are strong will and patience included in that ¡®maintenance.¡¯ Moreover, the maintenance of artistic activities at this infertile soil is apparently different with the passage of time that naturally flows. No matter what party it is, it requires leadership that merges the party, as well as management capacity that harmonizes the leadership in order to manage for a long time. The accumulation of time builds the history, and the pride is needless to say that it is the power to maintain the party.
Seoul Academy Ensemble is the very first Korean female chamber orchestra with 38 years of long history. They have performed around 200 concerts such as Annual Concert, Special Direction Concert, and Countryside & University Concerts. In addition, they have also performed abroad at the same time, and perceived the international sense. It is truly not a thing that could be easily done, and as well, it is the true victory of artistic pride.
The orchestra leader is Mrs. Joo Il Yeub. The 60th Annual Concert (Dec. 5th, Seoul Arts Center Recital Hall) was quite seemed as much as a 60th birthday event by accompanying universal Flautist Marc Grauwels & Conductor Bernd Gradwohl.
Speaking frankly, it is not quite contented with viewing the chamber orchestra concert in Korea, in which chamber orchestra activities are not successful. As it is not a field that has been deeply rooted, we have a tendency to go and watch them as an encouragement. The author have went to the ¡®Academy Ensemble¡¯ with that sort of mind, but was lucky enough to taste the passion of high quality music, which I totally haven¡¯t expected.
Joseph Haydn¡¯s ¡®Symphonie Nr. 24, D-dur¡¯ started with the sound that is somewhat beyond its control. However, conductor Bernd Gradwohl changed to purified, harmonized Vienna style of sounds with his smooth & modernized direction. Among the piece, the flautist Marc Grauwels added the attraction with his flute performance. After that, Francois Devienne¡¯s ¡®Concerto for Flute and Orchestra Nr. 7, e-moll¡¯ was performed. His music was outstanding because of his imagination and fantasy. As the technique was shown along with the very precise & delicate elements, the concentration of music has leaded to the climax.
Hence, there was a driven atmosphere front-of-house. This energy was surely delivered to the musicians, and the music ensemble has ripened. It was an excellent performance enough to show the great musician¡¯s power.
Then, the conductor has been in harmony with the musicians in W.A. Mozart¡¯s ¡®Symphonie Nr. 29, A-Dur kv201.¡¯ If our domestic conductor has conducted like agile Waltz style & dance type of conducting, which Bernd Gradwohl has shown, we might have thought that the conductor might have been out of his mind. However, that rhythm and taste was too natural for him, and moreover, very attractive.
It was easy to distinguish the difference of whom they are accustomed to that style and of whom they are not accustomed to that style. The musicians were performing very excitingly and it was a touchable staging to modify the audience. In Louis Spohr¡¯s ¡®string quartet¡¯, the precise & close connection among each other has surely contributed to the freshness of new Repertoire. However, a sense of loss was felt because it seemed to have an impression as if the time has over flown among the whole program structure.
The joy of music, which the musicians had felt this night, will sure be a long pleasing impression. The audience also might have thought that chamber orchestra is not something boring and simplified. The issue is that what makes the musicians¡¯ internal music capacities motivated.
As heard that their music will have a tour journey next year in the anniversary of Spain, helded by Korean Haydn Association, they will surely be able to express their music capacities with rich contents which are compared with some domestic groups who don¡¯t prepare enough and leave for tours.
For some audience fans who weren¡¯t leaving until the last moment, the flautist has shown a gesture as if he was going to sing a song, but soon he revealed his hidden flute and played, and it was quite joyful. This performance was quite an harmony of music quality and popular interests. It will be remained to our memory with outstanding repertoire constitution with wealthy enthusiasm.
